Belgian Recap: Yow Finds the Back of the Net as Westerlo Fights Back to Earn a Point

2 minutes, 51 seconds Read

Yow was wow for Westerlo with his goal but Fossey and his team fell flat in Pro League action.

Westerlo 2 – 2 Leuven

Bryan Reynolds and Griffin Yow were both in the starting lineup when OH Leuven came to town for their play-off clash. Both guys went the distance as they fought back from a 2-0 deficit to claim a point. Yow contributed a goal followed by one from Alfie Devine.

The first half of the game, though with a few chances such as Yow’s first half stoppage time attempt that narrowly went wide of the post, ended scoreless. A 53rd minute own goal from Emin Bayram, followed by Roggerio Nyakossi’s strike from a corner kick just five minutes later caught the hosts off guard.

Less than five minutes later however, Allahyar Sayyadmanesh spotted Yow’s run down the middle of the field and slid an inch perfect though ball to the American who got into the box and slipped the ball just inside the bottom left-hand corner.

On the hour mark, Alfie Devine came off the bench and in the 75th minute the Tottenham loanee got his head to the ball and put it past the OHL keeper to get the teams on parity. Neither however could find the game winner thus they ended up sharing the points.

“Relieved that we still managed to get a draw out of the fire,” said the Gamecocks head coach, Timmy Simons after the game. “It’s good that we didn’t let the heads hang, but first and foremost we have to stop giving away avoidable goals. But I’m relieved that we managed to get another draw. Next week at Charleroi we have to take 3 points to be able to claim more.”

Charleroi 1 – 0 Standard Liege

Marlon Fossey went the distance for les Rouches as they lost on the road to Charleroi in a very boring Sunday evening game in Wallonia. Both teams only managed two shots on goal as they pretty much shared possession. The headed goal by Antoine Bernier in the first half was all the scoring that was done. The loss also saw their opponents leap-frog them into second place.

Standard are just two points off the top spot held by Mechelen. Next up will be another away game, this time to Dender.

Notes

Kahveh Zahiroleslam came off the in the 73rd minute when KV Kortrijk were already three goals to the good. The game ended that way, with Sint-Truiden never managing to hit the back of the net. Although they lost, the Canaries are still in second place and two points out of the top spot. Up next they’ll face first place Cercle Brugge.

Devon De Corte got the nod and put in an 85-minute shift in the Anderlecht Futures defeat at the hands, um feet, of Lokeren. The Brussels boys are still nine points clear of the relegation zone with four games to go. They’ll take on Francs Borains over the weekend.

Justin Che went the distance in Patro Eisden’s 1-1 draw against top of the league Molenbeek. The Brondby loanee’s side will hit the road on Friday night as they travel to take on Lierse, who are coached by American Jamath Schoffner.

Kayden Pierre and Genk II lost on the road to Lommel in Challenger League action Saturday night and now find themselves in relegation trouble. They’ll try to get their act together when they go up against Royal Liege next.
