Belgian Recap: Yow and Reynolds’ Westerlo Shock Anderlecht

2 minutes, 27 seconds Read

The Westerlo Yanks celebrated a victory over Anderlecht, almost assuring that they will not be in a play-off relegation fight after next week’s final game of the regular season.

Westerlo 2 – 0 Anderlecht

Griffin Yow and Bryan Reynolds‘ team took a giant step into keeping themselves out of the relegation play-off group as they shocked fourth place Anderlecht on Sunday afternoon. Both Yanks went the duration in this game where both goals came early on in the first half.

Matija Frigan got the scoring underway in just the second minute using his head when the entire Anderlecht team forgot all about him on a corner kick and the Croatian headed it in from just a few yards out.

Twenty minutes later they doubled their lead when Isa Sakamoto pushed the ball back to Dogucan Haspolat and the Dutch born Turkish midfielder hit a screamer from 35 yards out that beat the Mauves defense and keeper.

The last game of their regular season will be up against last place Beerschot. The Gamecocks require just one point to assure their safety, so should make it into the middle group that will be fighting for a European place next season.

Union St Gilloise 3 – 0 Standard Liege

Les Rouches’ faint hopes of making it into the top championship play-off group have dashed as they fell to Union on Sunday night in Brussels. Marlon Fossey went the distance and his Australian teammate Aiden O’Neill collected a yellow card to make matters worse after going down two goals.

Promise David scored his 10th goal after 20 minutes to give the Unionist the lead that they would never relinquish. The Canadian born Nigerian hit the back of the net 10 minutes after the restart as well. Minutes later, O’Neill was shown his second yellow card.

With the game already won, Franjo Ivanović added insult to injury as he too hit the back of the net for the 10th time. Already securely in a top six spot, USG is fine but Standard will have to settle for the second play-off group after they go up against top of the league Genk.

Notes

Sint Truiden picked up a very valuable three points with their win over last place Beerschot. Kahveh Zahiroleslam stayed on the bench for the duration. With just one game to go in the regular season, the Canaries are on 31 points in 14th place. They’ll need to win their last game against Leuven to have a chance, but will also have to have help from other teams.

Justin Che played 90 minutes for Patro Eisden but they lost anyway to SK Beveren by a 2-1 scoreline. It was a big blow to the Flemish side as they look to get themselves promoted into the Pro League.

Devon De Corte played 16 minutes for the Anderlecht Futures as they lost 3-1 to Lierse, who are led by American coach, Jamath Shoffner, who saved Oostende from relegation last season only to see the team go bankrupt.
