Dutch Recap: Paxten Aaronson on the Mark vs League Leaders, Ajax

1 minute, 23 seconds Read

It was a quiet holiday weekend in the Dutch league with just two games being played. The full slate of clashes will take place midweek.

Utrecht 4 – 0 Ajax

On Easter Sunday, the Cathedral Citizens celebrated this holy holiday by finding the holes in the Ajax defense on four occasions, thereby destroying the champions in waiting at the Galgenward Stadium. Paxten Aaronson was one of the three goal-scorers with Miguel Rodriguez scoring a second half brace. The American went the distance and also picked up a yellow card.

With PSV not playing until midweek, Ajax was looking to extend their lead over the second place Farmers to 12 points, but Utrecht made sure that things didn’t go according to plan. Sebastien Haller got on the end of Siebe Horemans’ cross and blasted it into the net with a cheeky left footed shot from inside the box. Although they dominated the game, the visitors could not get the equalizer before the intermission.

The second half was not much better when it came to scoring though overall Ajax had 65% possession as well as 11 wasted corner kicks. Seven minutes after the restart however, Rodriguez needed a little help from VAR to confirm his goal on the fast break. Yoann Cathline’s through ball was indeed perfectly timed for the Spaniard forward who slipped the ball past the flailing keeper. Nine minutes later he was celebrating his second of the afternoon. The American’s strike was icing on the cake and his seventh of the season.

The Jersey boy and his Dutch team will be back in action on Thursday evening when they take on almost condemned to relegation, Waalwijk. Utrecht currently sits in fourth place.
