Belgian Recap: Fossey, Standard Win the Battle of the Yanks, While De Corte Assists in Challenger League

It was a Belgian Battle of the Yanks weekend and for the lower league, Devon De Corte provided an assist.

Westerlo 0 – 2 Standard Liege

With three Yanks starting this clash Westerlo, it was les Rouches who finally remembered how to win a game after picking up their first three points since the 10th of August. Captain Marlon Fossey led the visitors for the first half but was subbed off at the start of the second, after his side had already scored the two goals. Bryan Reynolds started and went the distance at right back for the Flemish side, and Griffin Yow also started but like Fossey, only got to play 45 minutes.

It was an important win for Standard, who were coming off a draw and three losses in their last four games. And although they didn’t have an exceptional game against Westerlo, with only two shots on target, both fortunately found the back of the net.

The first goal came in the 24th minute, against the run of play when Adnane Abid picked out Casper Nielsen and watched the Danish midfielder hit it into the far top corner for just his first goal of the season. The next one turned the goal provider into the goal scorerwhen Andreas Jungdal, between the Westerlo sticks, played a weak and pathetic ball to his defender, Arthur Piedfort, that allowed the Moroccan-Belgian the chance to pounce, shoot and blast it inside the near post.

The win leaves Standard on 11 points and in 8th place, while Westerlo with 9 points sits in 12th. Both teams next game will be against Club Brugge, first on Wednesday for Westerlo and then over the week for Standard.

Notes

Coach Jamath Shoffner and Lierse picked up their second victory of the season over the weekend when they American-owned Molenbeek by a 2-0 score line. The win moves them up to 11th place after 6 games.

Devon De Corte provided an assist for Anderlecht Futures after his team went down a goal and then a man. The 83rd minute strike by Nunzio Engwanda secured a point for the youngsters as the game finished 1-1.
