OH Leuven 1 – 0 Standard Liege
In the Sunday matinee where the fans probably wished they stayed at home, captain Marlon Fossey‘s Standard travelled to Leuven and left with nothing, thanks to an own goal by Daan Dierckx. Fossey went the distance at right back and his main contributions were an attempt at goal that went wide and a late second half yellow card.
Although the visitors dominated possession and had better chances overall, their undoing was Siebe Schrijvers’ corner kick that was going well wide of the box, but nobody told Dierckx, who got his head to the ball and saw it fly past his own keeper. The loss was the third in a row for les Rouches.
“It’s never nice to lose three games in a row,” Fossey told the press after the game. “(It was) frustrating because we don’t give much away and the goal comes from our own player. He had a great game, we just have to be angry with ourselves. We are not in shape, we are lucky that we are still early in the season.”
Mircea Rednic was recently fired as the Standard coach and replaced by Vincent Euvrard who took charge for the first time. Regarding the new coach, the captain said that, “He has been very good to us. Without bombarding us with information, we know what to do. Today we haven’t been able to show much of it.”
Euvrard will have a bit of time to work with his team during the international break and when they return to action, they’ll host third place Mechelen.
Westerlo 2 – 0 Antwerp
Bryan Reynolds continued in the Gamecocks starting lineup, but Griffin Yow just got a couple of garbage time minutes, coming into the game after the clock had already struck 90 minutes and was already won. It was the first loss of the season for Antwerp, thanks to goals from Isa Sakamoto and Arthur Piedfort on either side of the intermission.
After dominating play, Westerlo took the lead that they deserved after some poor defending from the Great Old’s back line. As the ball bounced around the box, Sakamoto got his foot to it and tucked it away for his second goal of the season since coming over from Gamba Osaka in the summer.
After the intermission, the visitors applied a lot of pressure and should have gotten themselves back into the game when they were awarded a penalty. Mahamadou Doumbia, who hit the game winner from the spot against Mechelen last weekend, was not the hero this time as he shot poorly and saw Andreas Jungdal make the save.
In the 75th minute Piedfort put the game to bed when Josimar Alcocer picked out the Belgian defender who scored his first professional goal, thus securing the three points for Westerlo. After the break, the 11th place team will head to Sint Truiden to take on the second place Canaries.
Notes
After picking up his first win last weekend, Jamath Shoffner‘s Lierse suffered a 1-0 defeat at the hands of Kortrijk. Next up for Lierse will be a Belgian Cup clash clash against Merelbeke.
