KVC Westerlo defender Bryan Reynolds, who had a rough start to his European adventure when he signed for AS Roma in 2021 and only played once for I Giallorossi is now thriving in the Belgian Pro League and has attracted the attention of a few European based clubs with one being the reigning Czech champs, AC Sparta Prague.
Having left FC Dallas, where he made 27 appearances for the MLS side, his time at Roma was limited as the Texan found himself on loan in Belgium, first with KV Kortrijk and then at Westerlo. Last year the Flemish team, having recently been promoted to the top flight, paid a cool €3.5 million ($3.65m) for the seven times capped USA international.
Czech media has reported that the American has been on the Sparta radar for a while and they even tried, but failed to sign him from Roma in the summer of 2023 but the defender ended up back in Belgium. Furthermore Železná Sparta have not had the best of starts to the season, plagued by injuries including two starting defenders being sidelined, so it’s a crucial position to be filled in the January transfer market.
Westerlo, a team currently in financial difficulties and in need of selling players, could double their money by making a deal with Sparta. Former Arsenal and Czech National Team midfielder Tomáš Rosický, who is currently the club’s sporting director would agree to a fair price for the €7 million ($7.3m) rated player.
The Czech champs currently sit in third place, 13 points behind their cross town nemesis, Slavia Prague and six points behind second place Viktoria Plzen. They are also struggling to make it into the next round of the Champions League, being four points adrift with just two games left in the contest against Bayern Leverkusen and Inter Milan.
With Westerlo going nowhere anytime soon, a move to Czechia and a chance to play in Europe makes sense for Reynolds. The transfer window opens soon, running from January 1st and closing February 3rd, 2025.
