Belgian Recap: Zahiroleslam Provides an Assist as Sint-Truiden Finally Pick Up Three Points

Those Yanks who did see action this weekend all managed to pick up some points in Pro League action.

Sint-Truiden 2 – 1 Leuven

The Canaries hosted OHL on Sunday night and let their visitors think that they would head home with a point in the bag, but a late goal changed that as they took all three at the Stayen. Kahveh Zahiroleslam was in the starting line-up for the Limburgers, went the distance and picked up the assist on STVV’s first goal.

It was a great start for newly appointed coach, Felice Mazzù who tasted victory his first time out in charge of the Canaries. It was also the team’s first Pro League victory of the season.

A couple of minutes into first half stoppage time the American striker spotted the run of Adriano Bertaccini and slotted the ball into the box for his strike partner. The Belgian hit it from the center of the box and into the bottom left corner of the netting to send the fans into a frenzy.

Leuven’s comeback started 20 minutes after the re-start when, from a corner, Birger Verstraete sent his cross into the box and Ezechiel Banzuzi got his head to it before a defender could threaten. It ended up just inside of the bottom right corner of the netting.

The hosts weren’t giving up however and when there was just under 10 minutes left on the clock, Billal Brahimi decided to pull the trigger from distance and watched his effort turn into the winning goal.

With a victory finally under their belts after seven games, Zahiroleslam and his side will travel to Antwerp to take on Beerschot on Saturday afternoon.

Anderlecht 2 – 2 Westerlo

Notes

Standard Liege came away 2-0 winners when they travelled to take on Dender on Friday night, however Marlon Fossey did not take part. The American returned late from national team duty and did not make it onto les Rouches’ team sheet. He should be back in the fold when they host Union St Gilloise in another Friday night clash.

Devon De Corte never left the bench as the Anderlecht Futures managed to pick up a point against Royal Liege on the road; the game ending 3-3. Next up for the youngsters will be a trip to Lommel.
