Marlon Fossey was the only Belgian based Yank to taste victory over the weekend, with the duo at Westerlo and Kahveh Zahiroleslam’s Sint-Truiden having to settle for a point in Pro League action.
Standard Liege 1 – 0 Beerschot
Marlon Fossey started for les Rouches as they took on newcomers Beerschot at the Sclessin on Sunday evening. The hosts had six shots on target but had to settle for the game winner that was taken from the penalty spot.
Standard got back to winning ways after dropping five points out of six in their last two games. They were evenly matched against Beerschot throughout most the contest however the game changed on the hour mark when Brian Plat made a terrible tackle on Aussie, Aiden O’Neill. After the referee brandished a yellow card, the VAR called Mr. Vergoote over to the video monitor. After careful deliberation, realizing that the Dutch defender’s studs were up, the yellow was changed for a red card.
Simion Machez was all over Ilay Camara in the box and this time a yellow card was shown as Vergoote pointed to the spot. VAR once again called the referee over to the monitor for a possible offside in the build-up however the on field decision stood and Soufiane Benidida smacked the ball into the top corner for the lead and eventual game winner.
Fossey and his team currently sit in the sixth spot and will look to move up the table when they head to ninth place Leuven over the weekend.
Westerlo 1 – 1 Leuven
After their first loss of the season to Gent last weekend, Westerlo bounced back and managed to hold on for a point after their early first half goal was cancelled out minutes later. Bryan Reynolds started for the Gamecocks and went the distance. Griffin Yow, still waiting on a potential move away from Westerlo started on the bench but was subbed on in the 63rd minute.
After just 14 minutes newcomer Adedire Mebude was celebrating his second Westerlo goal of the season. The English born Scotsman came over from Bristol City this summer and has made an immediate impact. When the clock struck 19 minutes, William Balikwisha repaid his coach’s confidence by putting him in the starting line-up by bagging his first goal of the season.
Though both teams got 10 shots off, neither could find the back of the net for a game-winner. Westerlo will try to get back to winning ways next weekend when they travel to take on Genk, with or without Yow.
Sint-Truiden 0 – 0 Union St Gilloise
It wasn’t an exciting game for either set of fans as neither side could find the back of the net and both only managed one shot on goal over the 90 minutes. Kahveh Zahiroleslam was unable to add to his three goal tally this time, though he did get a shot off in the box that was blocked.
After five games with just two points, the Canaries are already in relegation trouble. They’ll hope to right the ship however when they travel to Kortrijk on Saturday.
Notes
Devon De Corte started for Anderlecht II and put in a 66 minute shift but the 18 year old American was unable to influence the game as his side lost on the road by a 3-1 score line against Patro Eisden. Up next is a visit from RAAL La Louviere.
