German Recap: Brooks Scores, Sees Red in Hoffenheim Defeat

4 minutes, 22 seconds Read

John Brooks went from hero to zero in a span of 15 minutes as he scored for Hoffenheim but was sent off later in their loss to Eintracht Frankfurt.

Eintracht Frankfurt 3-1 Hoffenheim

Eintracht Frankfurt came from a goal down to take all three points in their win over eight-man Hoffenheim at Deutsche Bank Park.

John Brooks was in the starting eleven for Pellegrino Matarazzo’s side, completing 81 percent of his passes, winning two duels, and making one tackle in his 22 minutes of action. On the other side, Tim Chandler came on to play five minutes and some change.

Die Kraichgauer silenced the Frankfurt faithful after six minutes when Brooks would be on the spot to head in a corner kick from teammate Anton Stach. However, 15 minutes later, he would be heading to the showers when the referee showed him a straight red card for his tackle on Omar Marmoush. Initially, it appeared to be a good tackle, but the referee thought otherwise and the American center-back’s day was done.

The advantage allowed the hosts to level the score and they did so in the 32nd minute. Marmoush held the ball up in the center of the 18-yard box and then laid it off for Robin Koch to hammer home.

Hoffenheim was unsettled in the back and this allowed Frankfurt to take the lead in the 50th minute. Mario Gotze pounced on an errant pass and lofted the ball over to Junior Dina Ebimbe to head past goalkeeper Oliver Baumann and into the goal.

Frankfurt extended their lead in the 64th minute with the World Cup winner, Gotze, making the late run into the box to slam home a pass from Ansgar Knauff.

Hoffenheim remains in seventh place in the standings with 33 points.

Borussia Monchengladbach 3-3 FC Cologne

It was a game of goals as both Borussia Monchengladbach and FC Cologne shared the points following a thriller at Borussia Park.

Jordan Pefok and Joe Scally started for the Foals, with the center-forward completing 80 percent of his passes, winning three duels, making one key pass, and taking a single shot. Scally would complete 78 percent of his passes, win six duels, and make a tackle along with two key passes.

Cologne kicked things off in the seventh minute with a goal as Faride Alidou got a step ahead of his marker in the penalty area and took a shot from an impossible angle that deflected off the goalkeeper’s knee and ended up in the back of the net.

‘Gladbach responded just after the half-hour mark when the team went on the counterattack. Florian Neuhaus spotted Franck Honorat on the right side and sent the ball into his path, allowing the Frenchman to put his shot across the goalline.

Entering the second half, Cologne retook the lead in the 64th minute when Alidou rose up to head in Florian Kainz’s free-kick. The hosts leveled the score again in the 71st minute through Robin Hack, who came off the bench, headed in Stefan Lainer’s cross.

Borussia Monchengladbach then took the lead two minutes later, with Hack bagging his second on the day. A corner kick was headed back to the center of the 18-yard box where Scally was on the spot to trap the ball and leave it for the German midfielder to power through the crowd and into the goal.

However, Cologne would get the last word in the game as Damion Downs came on to tie the game once again as both teams settled for a point each.

Borussia Monchengladbach sits in 12th place in the standings with 27 points.
