Premier League Recap: Mixed Results for Americans

3 minutes, 33 seconds Read

It wasn’t a good weekend for the American contingent scattered around the Premier League with very few points being collected.

Wolverhampton 2 – 1 Fulham

Antonee Robinson was in the starting line-up for the Cottagers when they traveled to Wolverhampton to take on the Wanderers, while Tim Ream never got off the bench in this 2-1 loss.

The first half of the game ended in a stalemate but just seven minutes after intermission, Wolves were celebrating Rayan Ait-Nouri’s first goal of the season. With a crowded 18-yard box, Toti Gomes picked out the Algerian on the six-yard line and he easily put it past the keeper.

Fifteen minutes later, on another Wolves’ attack, Nelson Semedo’s shot was on target but a big deflection by Tom Cairney meant that the Scotsman was credited with an own goal.

Fulham left it until the end to fight back and when Alex Iwobi scored in the 98th minute, it was too little too late to get anything from the game.

Next up for the Cottagers will be a visit from fellow Londoners, Tottenham Hotspur

Bournemouth 2 – 2 Sheffield United

Austin Trusty was in the starting line-up for Sheffield United when they hosted Bournemouth and took a two-goal lead that disappeared in the 90th minute, thereby seeing the Blades drop two points on the road. Recently back from injury, Tyler Adams made the bench but never got to kick a ball on the day for the Cherries.

The scoring opened in the 27th minute when Jayden Bogle’s shot from inside the box was parried away by Neto in goal. But the Brazilian didn’t knock it far enough away and Gustavo Hamer hammered it into the back of the net for his fourth goal of the season.

The visitors doubled their lead halfway through the second half from a corner kick that was delivered into a crowded six-yard box. It was Jack Robinson who reacted quickest to score for the first time this season.

Ten minutes later it was game on after Dango Ouattara, assisted by Ryan Christie. From the corner kick, the second-half substitute headed it in from close range. The Burkina Faso midfielder turned provider for the next goal that came in the 91st minute, again starting from a corner kick. It was Enes Unal’s very first Premier League goal.

Still stuck in last place, United will have a week off before hosting Fulham, while Bournemouth hosts Luton Town.

Crystal Palace 1 – 1 Luton Town

It was the story of an early goal and a very late goal at Selhurst Park when Palace hosted strugglers Luton Town. Chris Richards went the distance for the London club, who should have had a three-point game except for the 96th-minute Hatters equalizer.

The first goal was a gift when Alfie Doughty made a lazy back pass that Daniel Munoz ran after, waited for Jean Phillipe Mateta to get into the box, and watched the Frenchman’s cheeky strike beat the Town keeper.

At the last chance saloon, the visitors stormed down the field as the clock was running out and Andy Townsend sent a high ball into the box. Somehow Cauley Woodrow got on the end of it and slid it inside the near post to break Selhurt Park hearts.

In 14th place, Palace will have a break before they face Nottingham Forest after the international break.

Notes

Matt Turner was on the bench, while Giovanni Reyna didn’t even make the team sheet as Nottingham Forest fell on the road to Brighton & Hove Albion by a 1-0 score line. Collecting no points, Forest is still out of the relegation zone but only three points more than 18th place Luton Town.

Up next for them will be a trip to Luton and a loss could see them fall into the danger zone.

Still out due to injury, Luca Koleosho took no part in Burnley’s 2-2 draw at West Ham United. They’ll go up against Brentford over the weekend.
