EFL Recap: Sargent, Wright Continue Goal-Scoring Ways

3 minutes, 8 seconds Read

Both Josh Sargent and Haji Wright scored over the weekend as Norwich City and Coventry City remained firmly in the promotion chase in the EFL Championship.

Norwich City 5-0 Rotherham United

Norwich City went on a goal glut as they moved themselves into the promotion playoff places following their drubbing of Rotherham United at Carrow Road.

Josh Sargent started and played 52 minutes for the Canaries, completing 90 percent of his passes, winning two duels, and putting three shots on target as David Wagner’s side bounced back from a 3-1 defeat to Middlesbrough last week.

The hosts opened the scoring in the 13th minute when Gabriel Sara headed in a cross from Jack Stacey on the right side from close range. Jacob Sorensen followed up eight minutes later when headed in Sara’s corner kick to double their lead.

Borja Sainz made it 3-0 for Norwich in the 32nd minute when he sent a screamer from long distance into the back of the net. Sargent would make it four in the first minute of stoppage time when he ran on to an early cross from Stacey to squeeze it past Rotherham goalkeeper Viktor Johansson.

Gabriel Sara closed out the scoring in the 47th minute when Johansson parried a shot from Sargent into the path of the Brazilan and he punished him with a brilliant volley.

Norwich City has moved up to sixth place in the standings with 58 points, just ahead of Hull City on goal difference.

Watford 1-2 Coventry City

Haji Wright’s double canceled out an early goal from Watford as Coventry City came away with all three points in their win at Vicarage Road.

Wright started and went the distance for the Sky Blues as he completed 64 percent of his passes, won two duels, made a tackle, and put three shots on target along with one key pass.

The visitors would find themselves behind after 20 minutes when Watford’s Ryan Porteous sent his looping header from a Ryan Andrews throw-in over Coventry goalkeeper Bradley Collins into the goal.

Coventry would then go on the hunt for the equalizer and were rewarded a penalty when the referee judged that Hornets’ goalkeeper Daniel Bachmann brought down Josh Eccles in the area. Wright then stepped up to convert the spot-kick in the 40th minute.

The second half saw both sides pushing to take the advantage, but it would be Wright who had the last word on proceedings as he scored the game-winner in the 72nd minute. Eccles pushed the ball down the right side before passing it to the American forward at the top of the 18-yard box. He then took his chance at the edge of the area and beat Bachmann with his shot.

Coventry City sits in eighth place in the standings with 57 points, just one behind Norwich and Hull.
