Cole Campbell came off the bench to score a spectacular goal that helped Elversberg secure a dominant win over Lennard Maloney and Mainz.
Elversberg 4-1 Mainz
Elversberg moved up to seventh place in the standings as they hit Mainz hard in the first half to complete a resounding win at Waldstadion Kaiserlinde.
Cole Campbell played 13 minutes and took two shots. Lennard Maloney played 27 minutes for Mainz.
The hosts jumped to an early lead after seven minutes when Felix Keidel struck with a free-kick. They doubled the lead 19 minutes later through Francis Onyeka when he collected a pass from David Mokwa, held off his marker, and put his shot past the goalkeeper.
Elversberg added a third goal in the first minute of stoppage time when Maurice Krattenmacher recovered the ball from a corner kick and put his shot in the lower right side of the goal.
Mainz made four changes through the course of the second half, but couldn’t find any solutions to get back into the game.
Then, a moment of magic occurred in the 90th minute when Campbell got his name on the scoresheet with a wonderful goal. The winger sent the ball out to the left side to Nicholas Mickelson. The left-back delivered a cross to Campbell, who sent the ball upwards off his chest and followed with a scissors kick into the back of the net.
Elversberg heads to Signal Iduna Park to face Borussia Dortmund, while Mainz play host to Bayern Munich on Saturday.
