German Recap: Casteneda, Paderborn Surrender Points at Werder Bremen

2 minutes, 6 seconds Read

Santiago Casteneda put in a strong performance for Paderborn, but the team squandered a lead to end up sharing the points with Werder Bremen in the Bundesliga.

Werder Bremen 2-2 Paderborn

Paderborn was on the verge of spoiling Werder Bremen’s 100th anniversary of the Weserstadion, but the hosts fought their way back to rescue a point.

Santiago Castaneda went the distance for the Blue-Blacks as he made a key pass, won seven duels, and made 14 defensive contributions.

The visitors scored after 18 minutes when Stefano Marino ran onto a pass from Steffen Tigges to put his shot in the upper right corner. They doubled their lead at the half-hour mark when a long throw-in was lost in the scramble of legs in the six-yard box, only for Tigges to knock it in.

The momentum shifted in the second half as Werder worked its way into the game.

The hosts cut the deficit in the 59th minute when Niclas Fullkrug collected a headed pass from Eren Dinkci to fire the ball into the back of the net. Their fortunes continued minutes later when the referee pointed to the spot for a penalty after a Paderborn handball. Fullkrug converted the spot kick.

Paderborn sits in 16th place in the standings with five points.
