Sergino Dest limped off the field at Philips Stadion over the weekend during PSV Eindhoven’s 2-1 win over AZ Alkmaar, adding to his long list of time on the sidelines over the past year.
In the 55th minute of the game, the American collided with AZ’s Dutch defender, Wouter Goes, falling to the ground and clutching his upper leg in apparent agony. He had to be helped off the field.
The Dutch born American has been unlucky with injuries, especially when he suffered a torn ACL that kept him out of action from April 2024 to March 2025. He missed out suiting up for the USMNT as they participated in the 2024 Copa America held in June t July 2024 in the USA.
In the post-game interview, PSV’s head coach Peter Bosz, stated that he feared it could be a serious injury for Dest. He could not say how long the American would be sidelined but felt certain that he will miss out on the USA’s upcoming friendly matches against Belgium and Portugal at the end of the month. These are the last games before the 2026 World Cup gets underway on June 9th.
The 37 times capped USA international will now focus of recovering as quickly as possible, hopefully in time for the World Cup.
“I will do everything in my power to be in top shape again towards the end of the season and I am convinced that I will succeed,” said Dest via PSV’s official website. “Thank you for the many heartwarming messages. That support only gives me extra motivation to work my recovery.”
