Westerlo’s Griffin Yow decided to call an end to his European dream and sign on with the New England Revolution of Major League Soccer after two and a half years with the Belgian side where he played 86 times for the Gamecocks, scoring 18 times and providing 10 assists.
The Virginian, who signed with DC United as a home-grown talent in 2019, spent three years in the nation’s capital where he only made 36 appearances and scored thrice before heading overseas.
Yow worked his way into the Westerlo starting line-up but unlike his American teammate, Bryan Reynolds, he soon fell out of favor and playing minutes became rare for the 23-year-old. He did however get selected for the US Olympic team and competed for the red, white and blue in Paris in 2024 during his time in Belgium.
Yanks Abroad had the pleasure of covering many of Yow’s games, including an exclusive interview with the winger in early 2024. Although the move is one that he must feel is best for his career, moving to a league that is rated lower isn’t always the best career choice. Time will tell.
The Revolution will open their 2026 MLS season on the road at Nashville on February 22nd.
