Belgian Recap: De Corte Goal Not Enough to Help His Anderlecht Futures

2 minutes, 21 seconds Read

Devon De Corte scored in the Anderlecht Futures late demise in Kortrijk, while Bryan Reynolds and Westerlo picked up three Pro League points in weekend Belgian action.

Westerlo 2 – 1 La Louviere

Bryan Reynolds went the distance for the Gamecocks on Saturday afternoon where they picked up all the points against league newcomers, RAAL; however, Griffin Yow got to watch the victory from the bench where a very early own goal by Le Loups defender, Maxence Maisonneuve put the visitors behind.

Throughout the game it was a tough, evenly matched one where, although Westerlo slightly dominated possession, both teams got off 14 shots with the home side edging out on shots on target, 4-3. Second half sub, Kyan Vaesen should have put the game to bed in the 86th minute but although the Belgian had a free header from close range, he decided to put it wide.

Regrets soon set in when Pape Moussa Fall, the 6-foot 7-inch Senegalese striker on loan from Metz outjumped everyone and put the ball into the back of the net for the equalizer 2 minutes later.

Barely a minute after the equalizer however, Adedire Mebude grabs the ball in the box, feigns a shot and then buries it just inside the far post. The three points moves Westerlo into the ninth spot with a trip to Gent coming up on the 27th.

Notes

Still sidelined with a muscle injury, Marlon Fossey missed out on Standard Liege’s one-nil road victory against Dender. The victory could be considered les Rouches’ revenge after the East Flanders’ side dumped the Walloons out of the Belgian Cup earlier this month. The win moves them up to sixth place, into the top play-off group but its early days. Next up will be a Boxing Day visit from Sint Truiden.

Devon De Corte came off the bench in the 69th minute when the Anderlecht Futures took on Kortrijk in Challenger League action. The young dual national found the back of the net a dozen minutes later to tie the game at 2-2. The wheels then fell off the Mauves’ bus soon afterwards with KVK scoring in the 89th, 91st and 94th minute to secure a 5-2 win. Up next for the B team will be, after their winter break, a visit from the Gent Reserves on January 17th.

Jamath Shoffner‘s Lierse SK came out on the wrong side of a goal fest as his boys gave up the winning goal in the 74th minute. After surrendering a pair of goals before the half hour mark, Lierse scored two of their own before giving up a third in first half stoppage time. In the 66th minute they tied it up again but 8 minutes later the game belonged to Lommel, who picked up all the points. Lierse returns to action on January 25th when they travel to Beveren.
