The Guyana Football Federation has announced the appointment of their new head coach of the men’s national team, former American international Thomas Dooley. The post has been vacant since last October when Jamaal Shabazz ended his fourth stint as the coach of the Golden Jaguars.
“I am delighted to welcome Coach Dooley to the GFF family,” Guyana Football Federation President Wayne Forde announced to the media.
“He joins us at the beginning of a new cycle for the Senior Men’s National Team Programme and has the opportunity to introduce his coaching philosophy and build a strong technical staff around him.
As a highly qualified gaffer with years of experience, he brings a full set of tools and expertise for the change in direction we would like to see. He will have our complete support, and I look forward to meeting with him in the coming weeks to charter a new course for our beloved Golden Jaguars Programme.”
The German-born American is not a stranger to international soccer. He had two stints as the boss of the Philippines National Team first from 2014 to 2018 and then again in 2022.
After his career as a player, where he spent a couple of years with Schalke in the Bundesliga, before heading back to the USA to join the Columbus Crew and then MetroStars, the midfielder, became the first American to coach in Europe. The veteran of 81 games for the USMNT became the head coach of 1. FC Saarbrücken in 2002.
Guyana, located in the northeast of South America and bordering Venezuela, Brazil, Suriname and the Atlantic Ocean, they are currently ranked as the 153rd best team in the world by FIFA.
