US Soccer announced on Sunday that AZ Alkmaar attacking midfielder Djordje Mihailovic has joined the latest USMNT roster for the upcoming CONCACAF Nations League games in place of the injured Tim Weah.
Three days following the announcement of interim coach Anthony Hudson‘s 24-man roster for the upcoming games, Weah had to be stretchered off the field at the tail-end of Lille’s 2-0 win over Tolouse with a head injury.
It was revealed on Sunday that the usual USMNT starter has been forced to enter concussion protocols due to the knock, and US Soccer wasted no time in naming Mihailovic as his replacement.
The 24 year-old joined the Eredivisie team during the winter break and has been a regular contributor, with eight appearances for the team across all competitions, registering one goal and an assist along the way.
He has also suited up for the USMNT on six occasions, most recently in a 2020 friendly win over El Salvador. The former Montreal player looked to be a likely candidate to push for a World Cup roster spot after having a strong summer while still in his final months in MLS, however was derailed by an unfortunate injury before the September friendlies, and was forced to miss out.
The team visits Grenada and hosts El Salvador on March 24 and 27, respectively, with a shot to reach June’s final round of the Nations League competition on the line.
