English Recap: Pulisic Assist Saves Chelsea

5 minutes, 5 seconds Read

Christian Pulisic was only given six minutes to work some magic for Graham Potter, and the American delivered, while the Yanks at Leeds could only manage a point at home against Villa.

Crystal Palace 1 – 2 Chelsea

Christian Pulisic provided the game winning assist to help Graham Potter to his first win as Chelsea boss. Chris Richards was not in the lineup for Cyrstal Palace.

Pulisic has been relegated to life on the bench for the Blues, and had to watch as Jordan Ayew threaded a delightful cross to Adsonne Eduard at the back post to catapult Crystal Palace into the lead.

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang equalized in the 38th minute, getting a crucial lifeline before half-time. Thiago Silva was on the end of a long switch, and his cushioned header to his striker was clinically finished.

Pulisic came on with six minutes to go, and his attacking run drew defenders, with the American picking the perfect moment to lay the ball off to Conor Gallagher. The midfielder, who spent last season at Palace, hit a rocket to the top far corner for the game winner.

Chelsea welcome AC Milan on Wednesday in Champions League action, while Palace play Leeds on Sunday.

Leeds 0 – 0 Aston Villa

Brendan Aaronson and Tyler Adams started for Jesse Marsch’s Leeds United, Aaronson lasting 79 minutes while Adams went the distance.

The game was Leeds first game in nearly a month, and they were forced to play with ten men for half of the game due to a Luis Sinisterra red card. His first foul was a rash tackle from behind, but the second card came just after half time for impeding a free kick.

Aston Villa had the closer of the chances, Ollie Watkins hitting the post but being denied. Aaronson tried his best, but he was unable to get past the Aston Villa back line.

Callum Wilson wasted no time getting the scoring off the back post run with a header in the 11th minute. Miguel Almiron doubled the advantage with a sublime finish with the outside of his boot in the 33rd minute.

Newcastle would add a third with another far post header, this time Fulham goalkeeper Berd Leno with the save only pushed it on to Sean Longstaff who slotted home in the 43rd minute.

Almiron would add a second on the night in the 57th minute with a back post tap in after a sweeping counter attack.

Bobby Decordova-Reid pulled one back in the 88th minute, but it was too little too late for the Cottagers.

Up next for Fulham is a trip to West Ham on Sunday.
