It has been a frustrating 2021-2022 Bundesliga season for Giovanni Reyna, and with the latest injury setback coming over the weekend Borussia Dortmund has decided to shut him down for their remaining games.
The injury occurred just two minutes into BVB’s game against Stuttgart, with the 19-year-old pulling up while he was chasing down the ball. In tears, he headed off the field for the second time this season as he was making his way back at club and international levels.
Dortmund would report later that Reyna had muscle and tendon issues in the hamstring which would rule him out for the rest of the current campaign.
Reyna’s injury couldn’t come at a bad time as Dortmund still have a mathematical chance to catch Bundesliga leaders Bayern Munich, with nine points separating the two.
Despite the setback, head coach Marco Rose remains confident that the teenager will become one of the best players in the world.
“Gio will be a world class player,” Rose said in an interview after their 2-0 win over Stuttgart. “He’s a top lad with unbelievable qualities. We’ll help him to get properly back on his feet.”
While Reyna will play no longer this season at Dortmund, it’s uncertain what role he will play for the U.S. men’s national team when they begin defense of their CONCACAF Nations League crown in June.
