Yanks in Poland: Deziel Continues to Shine, Acosta and Zahiroleslam Struggle to Make an Impact

The latest round of fixtures in the Polish Ekstraklasa brought mixed fortunes for the American contingent in Poland’s top division. While several players struggled to find their rhythm or make an impact, young defender Robert Deziel Jr. delivered another commanding performance, solidifying his status as the platoon’s standout.

Deziel Anchors for the Legionaires

Operating on the right side of a back three, Deziel played the full 90 minutes for Legia Warszawa in a hard-fought scoreless draw against league rivals Górnik Zabrze. The 21-year-old center-back anchored the defensive line with poise and discipline, recording two tackles and seven recoveries to preserve the clean sheet.

His commanding display reflects the standard set by Legia manager Marek Papszun, who challenged the young American upon his arrival in Poland:

“It will be a step up, maybe even two steps up, but don’t waste any time, don’t look around and get distracted. Try to adapt and show what you can do.”

Deziel has taken that guidance to heart, rapidly becoming an essential piece of Legia’s defensive foundation.

Acosta and Zahiroleslam Find Minutes, but No Rhythm

The weekend was far more frustrating for the other active Americans. Veteran midfielder Kellyn Acosta put in an 85-minute shift in central midfield during Pogoń Szczecin’s 3-1 loss to Raków Częstochowa. Acosta struggled to dictate the tempo and conceded a penalty in the 40th minute, though Pogoń were spared additional damage when Raków failed to convert from the spot.

Meanwhile, forward Kahveh Zahiroleslam entered for the final 24 minutes of Cracovia’s 2-1 home defeat to Motor Lublin. Coming on as a late attacking option, he struggled to make an impact, logging just six touches as Cracovia chased the game unsuccessfully.

Unused substitutes:

  • Maximilian Dietz was an unused substitute for Górnik Zabrze’s nil-nil draw to league Rivals Legia Warszawa.
  • Adam Basse was an unused substitute in Raków Częstochowa’s 3-1 victory over Pogoń Szczecin.
