Cameron Carter-Vickers and Auston Trusty started for Celtic to come away with a win over George Bello, Samuel Adeniran and LASK, while Tanner Tessmann and Lyon settled for a tie with Fenerbahce in the first leg of the UEFA Champions League playoff.
Celtic 3-0 LASK
The Scottish champions put themselves one foot into the Champions League group stage with a win over the team from Austria at Celtic Park.
Cameron Carter-Vickers played the full 90 minutes, completing 94 of his passes and winning five duels, while center-back partner Auston Trusty completed 95 percent passing and won three duels. On the other side, George Bello completed 87 percent passing and won five duels, while Samuel Adeniran took six shots.
The hosts were on their heels early in the game when LASK had two excellent scoring opportunities. Moses Usor’s first was ruled out due to offside, and Adeniran’s effort a minute later went wide of the target.
Celtic broke the scoreless deadlock in the 26th minute through Benjamin Nygren’s strike from the edge of the 18-yard box. Camilo Duran doubled their lead 12 minutes later with a volley into the back of the net.
The Colombian sealed the game for the Hoops in the 67th minute with a goal into the roof of the net.
LASK will have a lot of work to do to overturn the deficit when both sides play the second leg at the Raiffeisen Arena next week.
Fenerbahce 1-1 Lyon
Both sides will have to wait until next week to decide which will advance, as they settled for a tie at the Chobani Stadium.
Tanner Tessmann went the distance for Lyon, completing 82 percent of his passes, winning three duels, and taking two shots.
The French side opened the scoring in the 40th minute when Lois Openda was on the spot to head in a cross from Corentin Tolisso.
Fenerbahce leveled the score just minutes into the second half when Mason Greenwood fired a curling shot from the right side of the area.
The second leg heads to France at Parc Olympique Lyonnais.
