EFL Recap: Wright, Agyemang Score Goals to Lift Wins for Teams

2 minutes, 32 seconds Read

Haji Wright scored the game-winning goal for Coventry City to keep their promotion hopes high, while Patrick Agyemang bagged one for Derby County to steal three points.

Coventry City 2-1 Leicester City

Haji Wright’s late winner gave Coventry City all three points over Leicester City at the CBS Arena in a heated promotion race.

The forward came off the bench for the Sky Blues to play 23 minutes, winning six duels, making two recoveries and a tackle, and taking three shots.

The hosts were stunned 10 minutes into the game when Leicester’s Jordan James scored after some fine passing play from Issahaku Fatawu and Bobby De Cordova-Reid.

Coventry went on the attack in the second half and leveled the score in the 48th minute. Jack Rudoni passed the ball out wide to Mason Clark, who then returned it to the midfielder for a shot at goal. However, the ball somehow deflected off Ellis Simms and ended up in the back of the net.

Wright, who hasn’t scored a goal since October last year, found the winner in the 85th minute. Leicester’s poor clearance in the area allowed Tatsuhiro Sakamoto to take possession, cross the ball to the far post, and the American tapped it in.

Coventry remains in the top spot of the standings with 55 points, six ahead of Middlesbrough.

Preston North End 0-1 Derby County

Derby County gave their pursuit of a playoff spot a boost as Patrick Agyemang headed in the game-winner over Preston North End at Deepdale.

Agyemang started and played 89 minutes for the Rams, winning six duels, making two recoveries, and taking five shots.

After a scoreless first half, the visitors came with an excellent chance to break the deadlock in the opening minutes of the second. Ben Brereton Diaz’s cross from the right side left the American forward an easy chance to put his shot away, but his shot sailed over the crossbar.

Derby tried hard to find a way for a goal, and they finally got it in the 82nd minute when Brereton Diaz crossed the ball into the 18-yard box for Agyemang to head it home.

The Rams now sit in 12th place in the standings with 38 points, five away from the playoff places.
