Gio Reyna has finally completed his transfer saga, as it was announced on Saturday that the midfielder joined Borussia Monchengladbach from German Bundesliga rivals Borussia Dortmund.
According to the details of the deal, the 22-year-old has signed a contract that runs until June 2028.
Earlier reports suggested that Reyna was headed to Italy, where Serie A side Parma had shown interest in signing him. However, the Foals showed later with an offer to lure him away from the Ruhr-based team.
“Gio brings plenty of experience with him, in addition to being a young player with plenty of potential,” said Borussia Monchengladbach’s managing director for sport, Roland Virkus. “We have been monitoring him for a while now and are convinced that he has the qualities needed to help us on the pitch. He’s familiar with the Bundesliga and can play at a number of different positions in attack.”
The young man, born in Sunderland, England, played over 100 games for BVB, scoring 19 goals. He was considered one of the bright spots for the team as he rose through the ranks of its academy and joined the senior team. However, a series of injuries slowed his progression and ultimately saw him as the odd man out.
Now, after signing with Borussia Monchengladbach, there is a chance he can get his career back on track.
“Borussia [is] a fantastic, big club,” said Reyna. “I’m delighted that the transfer has been able to be completed and am looking forward to getting to know everyone here, as well as tackling the upcoming games together.”
Monchengladbach’s game comes on Sunday when they face Hamburg.
