Around the Continent: Strong Pukstas Performance Fuels Return of Transfer Rumors

A strong performance by Rokas Pukstas just days before the end of the summer transfer window has once again fueled rumours of a departure from Hajduk Split, while Korede Osundina and Samuel Adeniran both got onto the scoreboard in their respective leagues.

We’ll take a look around the European continent (and quickly over to one of those nearby islands) at how Yanks playing outside of the leagues getting our usual detailed coverage did during the weekend’s games.

Denmark

Fredericia 3 – 2 SønderjyskE

Matthew Hoppe continued his spell in SønderjyskE’s starting lineup on Friday, but for the second straight week, failed to have as much of an impact as during his earlier goalscoring substitute appearance in the team’s third game of the season. Playing 75 minutes at center forward, Hoppe didn’t take any shots, but set up three chances before leaving the game with his team down 2-1. They went on to lose 3-2 thanks to an injury-time winner from the hosts, leaving them second-last in the standings ahead of next weekend’s game against second-place Brøndby.

Vejle BK 0 – 2 FC Midtjylland

South Carolina native Jonathan Amon returned from a short, three-game injury spell to make a substitute appearance for Vejle in their 2-0 home loss to Midtjylland on Sunday. While he had little chance for impact with only seven touches in 18 minutes, the 26 year old’s re-emergence with the club he joined during the summer transfer window is encouraging, after a career that has been heavily impacted by injuries.

Randers FC 0 – 2 Brøndby IF

Justin Che and Gavin Beavers were both unused substitutes for second-place Brøndby in their 2-0 road win over Randers on Sunday. The team visits Strasbourg on Thursday in Europa Conference League qualifying.

Scotland

Celtic 4 – 1 Falkirk

Cameron Carter-Vickers was given a rest from his usual starting duties in Celtic’s defense as they momentarily switched their attentions to the League Cup on Friday. Auston Trusty was given a run-out in his place, and helped the team storm to a 4-1 home win over Falkirk, to reach the quarterfinal. CCV will be back for the team’s home game against Kairat Almaty in Champions League qualifying on Wednesday.

Greenock Morton 0 – 3 Aberdeen

Dante Polvara didn’t make it off of Aberdeen’s bench on Saturday as they advanced to the League Cup final eight with a 3-0 win over second-tier team Greenock Morton.

Croatia

Hajduk Split 3 – 0 Slaven

Rokas Pukstas scored his first goal of the new season for Hajduk Split in Sunday’s 3-0 league win over Slaven. The goal, his team’s second of three, came in the 78th minute, three minutes after he came close on a breakaway, and was a towering header off of a deep set piece.

With rumors once again resurfacing of suitors for the US youth international, this time in England and Italy, all eyes will be on the 20 year-old to see whether there is any real fire behind the smoke this time around.

Austria

LASK 2 – 1 Austria Wien

Former USL and MLS journeyman Samuel Adeniran scored his first league goal of the season, a well-placed header, to help his team LASK to a win over Austria Wien on Sunday. Fellow American George Bello played the full game at left back, and was given some of the blame for Wien’s lone goal of the game.

For the visitors, Maurice Malone started on the left side of a front-three, and managed four shots, forcing a pair of saves from the LASK keeper.

Grazer AK 1 – 1 WSG Tirol

Donovan Pines played 90 minutes in central defense for Grazer AK, as they drew with WSG Tirol at one goal apiece. Quincy Butler played the full game on the wide right of Tirol’s midfield, picking up a yellow card. Technically, Grazer’s Beres Owes scored a brace, albeit with one being into his own goal.

Poland

Radomiak Radom 1 – 2 Jagiellonia Białystok

German-American midfielder Leon Flach started and played 90 minutes on the right side in Jagiellonia Białystok’s 2-1 road win over Radomiak Radom on Sunday in the Polish Ekstraklasa. Recent arrival Aziel Jackson didn’t make it off of Jana’s bench, his second straight no-show after being subbed out during halftime in his first start last weekend.

Cracovia 1 – 0 Widzew Łódź

Recent arrival Kahveh Zahiroleslam watched the duration of Cracovia’s 1-0 home win over Widzew Łódź on Friday.

Portugal

AVS Futebol SAD 0 – 2 Casa Pia AC

Illinois-born Korede Osundina scored his first-ever goal for Portuguese club on Friday night, helping the team to a two-goal victory over AVS Futebol. After being sparingly used since joining the club from the Dutch second tier in the winter transfer window, the opportunistic 31st-minute winner from near the spot should give him a leg up on retaining his starting role when the team visits Porto on Sunday.

Highlights of the game including Osundina’s goal can be seen here.
