Gold Cup Recap: USA 1-2 Mexico

1 minute, 54 seconds Read

The United States men’s national team had a promising start, but Mexico fought back to lift the Concacaf Gold Cup in the final on Sunday at NRG Stadium in Houston, Texas.

The Americans got things going in the right way after four minutes in the contest when Chris Richards headed in Sebastian Berhalter’s free kick as the ball got past goalkeeper Luis Malagon and crossed over the goal line.

Mexico worked its way into taking possession of the game and leveled the score in the 27th minute when Marcel Ruiz played the ball to Raul Jimenez in the 18-yard box to put his shot past Matt Freese.

The U.S. went for a long stretch without a shot since the goal early in the game, but came with a good chance to retake the lead before halftime. Berhalter’s long pass over the top found Alex Freeman, who tried to head the ball on target. However, Malagon was fortunate that he was able to block the attempt with his head.

Both teams entered the opening minutes of the second half, hoping to add more goals. Roberto Alvarado had a chance with a left-footed shot that narrowly missed the goal, while Max Arfsten’s curler at the other end went wide of the mark.

Then, controversy reared its ugly head in the 65th minute when Arfsten made a threatening dribble into the area. As the wingback tried to make his way through Alvarado and Jorge Sanchez, the right-back handled the ball. The referee and video assistant referee waved off any pleas from the U.S. bench.

The tension grew even more as the game remained deadlocked. However, Mexico scored the game-winner in the 77th minute when Edson Alvarez was on the spot to steer Johan Vasquez’s free kick. There was an issue regarding whether the captain was offside, but VAR gave the all-clear as El Tri took home their 10th Gold Cup.

With the tournament now behind them, the U.S. will continue its preparations for the 2026 World Cup with friendlies against South Korea and Japan in September.
