English Recap: Haji Wright Hat-Trick Sinks Sunderland

3 minutes, 6 seconds Read

After a long injury layoff, Haji Wright reintroduced himself to the Coventry City fans by scoring thrice on his return to the line-up.

Coventry City 3 – 0 Sunderland

It was the Haji Wright Show on Saturday afternoon as the Los Angelenos made Sunderland keeper Anthony Patterson pick the ball out of his net on three occasions, twice in the first half and once after the intermission. It had been a frustrating four months out due to injury for Wright, where he last scored for his team was way back in November.

His first came from the top of the D after he picked up the ball, turned defender Romain Mundle and hit it hard and low to the right side of the goal, giving the keeper no chance of a save. This came in the 21st minute. Before the half hour mark, the striker was celebrating again when he put the ball on the spot and blasted it home after being brought down just inside the box by Chris Mepham. The free kick was sent right down the middle as Patterson dove to his right.

In the 73rd minute when he was played through the middle and spotted the keeper advancing, without taking a touch, cool as you like, the Yank chipped the ball over Patterson and into the back of the net.

The three points keep the Sky Blues in a play-off promotion spot as they sit in fifth place but just two points ahead of seventh place West Brom, who are also fighting to get to the Premier League via the play-offs. With just eight games left, they will next go up against Sheffield United after the international break.

EXTENDED HIGHLIGHTS ▶️ | Coventry City v Sunderland | Sky Bet Championship 2024/25 🏆

Fulham 2 – 0 Tottenham

Antonee Robinson went the distance on the Fulham back line as they defeated London rivals Spurs at Craven Cottage.

Though a tight contest with nothing separating the two sides early on, it was the two goals in the 78th and 88th minute by Rodrigo Munoz and Ryan Sessegnon that saw the game run away from the second best team in north London.

The Cottagers sit in the eighth spot and have a fighting chance for a European spot next season with nine games left in the season. Up next they’ll have another derby on their hands when Crystal Palace travels up the road.

Bournemouth 1 – 2 Brentford

Tyler Adams played 79 minutes in a losing effort when Brentford travelled down to the coast and left with three points in the bag. It was the Bees who scored all the goals but unfortunately one was into the back of their own net, thanks to Vitaly Janelt in the 17th minute.

Yoane Wissa leveled things up when the clock struck 30 minutes played and Christian Norgaard hit the winner with 20 minutes left to play. The Poppies will next face Manchester City in FA Cup action but that will not be until after the international break.

Notes

Josh Sargent and Norwich City suffered defeat at the hands (and feet) of Bristol City on Friday night and slip to 13th place. Up next however will be a visit from West Brom Albion. This game ended 2-1.

Aiden Morris and Middlesborough had to settle for a scoreless draw away at Luton Town over the weekend. Their next game will be at home against Oxford United.

Ethan Horvath was in goal for Cardiff City where he surrendered just one goal, which was great news for the Welsh side as they scored two and picked up a rare three points away to Blackburn Rovers over the weekend. This breaks their three game league losing streak. Hopefully they’ll be as successful next time out when Sheffield Wednesday comes to town.
