Brendan Aaronson got his name on the scoresheet for Union Berlin as the capital team continued to lift themselves further away from the relegation zone with a win over Werder Bremen.
Union Berlin 2-1 Werder Bremen
The capital team scored back-to-back goals and did enough to hold on as they came away with a much-needed win over Werder Bremen at Stadion An der Alten Forstere to give a boost to their survival hopes.
Brendan Aaronson started for Union and played 78 minutes, completing 79 percent of his passes, winning 12 duels, making three tackles, and putting two shots on target.
The first half ended scoreless, but Aaronson came very close before the whistle when he sent a volleyed attempt goal-bound only for Werder Bremen goalkeeper Michael Zetterer to make a spectacular save.
The action would pick up in the second interval as the hosts hunted for a goal. They were rewarded in the 50th minute when Aaronson did well to outmuscle his marker to maintain possession of the ball and send it into the 18-yard box for Robin Gosens to pick up. The German’s pass was blocked by a Werder Bremen defender, but luckily Yorbe Vertessen was on the spot to pounce on the loose ball and drive it home.
Union doubled their lead mere seconds later Aaronson took possession of the ball got past one defender then somehow was able to pass the ball to Vertessen with two Werder players on him. The Belgian then returned the ball to the American as he nailed it into the back of the net.
Mitchell Weiser cut the deficit for the visitors in the 63rd minute when he headed in a corner kick from close range.
However, there would be no equalizer as Union Berlin picked up a precious three points to move them up to 13th place in the standings with 28 points.
