Haji Wright scored for Coventry as they could only come away with a point against Swansea. Elsewhere, Josh Sargent returned from injury for Norwich City as they were handed a defeat by Millwall.
Coventry City 2-2 Swansea City
USMNT head coach Gregg Berhalter will be taking notes on this Wright resurgence in the Championship. With a goal and another assist, which should have gone to the American’s name if it weren’t for Ellis Simms stealing it from him. The ball was destined to pass the line with no goalkeeper and defender in sight, but Simms thought it wasn’t, so he tapped it in from less than an inch away from the goal but I digress. Wright has now picked up eight goal contributions in his last ten starts for the Sky Blues, and half of that tally came from the previous three matches, suggesting how effective the 6’4″ forward truly is off the left wing.
Surprisingly, it was the visitors who struck first despite Coventry’s early chances, courtesy of Liam Walsh in the seventh minute. Walsh capitalized on a defensive error at the top of the box, slotting it past Bradley Collins.
Coventry needed just three minutes to level the proceedings. Palmer found Wright, who dribbled into the box before cutting onto his left foot and firing beyond the reach of Carl Rushworth.
In the 65th minute, Tatsuhiro Sakamoto’s curling cross found Wright at the back post. The forward nodded towards the opposite corner, seemingly heading in before Ellis Simms prodded home. Simms took no chances, but his goal will be credited as a Wright assist even if it was a goal attempt.
While Coventry controlled the contest, Swansea applied late pressure and earned a free kick 20 yards out when Lowe was fouled in the second minute of added time. Substitute Liam Cullen stepped up to rifle home the equalizer three minutes into stoppage time, securing a point for Swansea.
Preston North End 0-1 Sheffield Wednesday
Duane Holmes and Preston continue their inconsistent season with another loss, this time to, on the day, bottom-of-the-league Sheffield Wednesday, who now leapfrogs Rotherham in the table. Preston dominated possession before the interval and displayed sharpness in attack, yet they struggled to produce positive results. Despite an improved second half, they couldn’t evade a defeat despite Wednesday going down a man in the 85th minute, leaving them four points away from the play-off spots.
North End started the match positively, as Alan Brown launched a shot over the bar after a clever flick from Duane Holmes, who, following a swift break, also sent an effort too high.
Nevertheless, Wednesday’s defensive organization and discipline established an ideal opportunity for counter-attacks, exemplified by Marvin Johnson’s strike in the 27th minute. Johnson neatly placed the ball at the near post after sprinting through on goal, courtesy of a delightful pass from Bailey-Tye Cadamarteri carving PNE open.
The Owls had to withstand constant pressure after the break, but North End, unable to register an attempt on target in the first half, couldn’t secure an equalizer despite the hosts seeing George Byers sent off with five minutes of regulation remaining and an additional seven minutes in added time.
