Tessmann Added to USMNT Roster for Injured Cardoso

Venezia midfielder Tanner Tessmann will finally get his first shot at USMNT glory in more than two years, after he was added to Gregg Berhalter’s roster in place of Johnny Cardoso.

US Soccer made the announcement on Saturday, giving the Venezia all-around midfielder his first call-up since his debut in early-2021, several months before he made the move to Europe.

He was in the mix for inclusion in the roster for the Gold Cup earlier this summer, but reportedly withdrew himself from consideration after the timing of the camp and tournament conflicted with his wedding.

The Alabama-born 21 year-old takes the place of Internacional midfielder Johnny Cardoso, who suffered an ankle injury in a Copa Libertadores game several days ago.

Despite playing in Italy’s Serie B for Venezia, who were relegated from the top flight more than one year ago, he has turned heads by becoming one of the team’s most important and consistent players, and one of the top prospects of the division.

Despite remaining with the club following the close of the transfer window, he was linked ot several Serie A clubs, including Lazio, Atalanta and Bologna, as well as Germans Stuttgart.

Most recently, he scored a last-minute winning goal for Venezia in their midweek road win over Sampdoria, a result which put them in a solid third place in the division after three games.

Following the weekend’s action, where Venezia will visit Cittadella on Sunday night, Tessmann will report to St. Louis for the short camp ahead of friendlies against Uzbeckistan and Oman.
