English Recap: Sargent Scores Winner for Norwich

Josh Sargent was on the score sheet in a big win for the Canaries as Chris Richards notched his second Premier League start for Crystal Palace in their impressive draw against Newcastle.

Crystal Palace 0 – 0 Newcastle United

Chris Richards continued his rise in Patrick Vieira’s Crystal Palace, going the distance against high flying Newcastle as the teams shared the points.

Richards did have a chance to score at the end of the first half, but his header went over the bar, keeping the game scoreless at the break.

The American will hope to continue his starting role as they welcome Manchester United for nearly back to back games. Palace sit in 12th place in the Premier League.

Leeds 0 – 0 Brentford

Jesse Marsch earned a valuable point against eighth-place Brentford, opting to start both Brenden Aaronson and Tyler Adams in the scoreless draw. 

The point keeps Leeds just above the relegation zone with 18 points and in 15th place, with Bournemouth sitting in the drop places with only one point less. Leeds were not without their chances, including a fierce shot from Aaronson that didn’t beat Brentford keeper David Raya.

Adams made headlines after a clash in front of the Brentford bench, but the referee didn’t see enough in it to issue a yellow card. Leeds will hope to get a valuable three points against 13th placed Nottingham Forest next Sunday in the Premier League.

Coventry City 2 – 4 Norwich

Josh Sargent was on the score sheet for Norwich in their six goal thriller against Coventry City, a result which saw them climb to fifth.

The scoring started in the sixth minute through Michael Rose, after a corner kick saw the Coventry player score an own goal. Norwich would double their advantage in the tenth minute after Onel Hernandez dispatched a quality finish under pressure.

Sargent’s goal came in the 18th minute after he kept his wits about him to stay free at the penalty spot, receiving the cut back pass from Teemu Pukki for a one-touch finish. The frantic pace continued as J Allen scored just two minutes later to claw one back.

The comeback was on in the 26th minute after Norwich failed to clear their lines, with Kasey Palmer thumping home a shot from distance after being given time and space. However, Kieran Dowell put space between the two teams in the 65th minute with a quality finish with his left foot under pressure.

Norwich, now fifth, take on first place Burnley next Saturday.

Birmingham 1 – 2 Preston North End

Auston Trusty started and went the distance, despite picking up a noticeable finger injury, while Matthew Olosunde did not feature for Preston North End.

Ryan Ledson scored in the tenth minute with a thumping header, followed by Alan Browne’s 15th-minute header to double the advantage for the visitors.

Lukas Jutkiewicz got one back for Birmingham in the 83rd minute with a big header. Trusty was given medical treatment during the match for what appeared to be a dislocated finger, but played through the final whistle.

Birmingham take on Blackburn on Saturday in the FA Cup, while PNE takes on Tottenham int he same competition. Preston sit in 11th, while Birmingham sit in 19th.

Sunderland 2 – 0 Middlesbrough

Zack Steffen started and went the distance for Middlesbrough and Matthew Hoppe was on the bench for the visitors, while Lynden Gooch was still out for Sunderland.

Steffen came up big in the first half to keep his team in it, but a 49th-minute red card to to Dael Fry saw Ross Stewart step up to take the resulting penalty kick. The American made the first save, but his parry went straight back to the forward who tapped home.

On-loan Amad Diallo thumped home the second, leaving Steffen stranded. Boro sit in sixth, while Sunderland climb to ninth. Sunderland take on Fulham on Saturday in the FA Cup, while Boro play again on the 28th against Watford.

Wigan Athletic 0 – 2 Luton Town

Ethan Horvath was able to keep a clean sheet as Luton Town climbed on level points with the playoff race contenders, sitting in seventh place.

Harry Cornick scored in the 11th minute, while Elijah Adebayo got the insurance goal in the 53rd minute.

The American was spared a goal against after a fortunate offside call that would have leveled the game. Luton next take on Grimsby in the FA Cup.

Burnley 2 – 1 West Bromwich Albion

Daryl Dike started and went the distance in West Brom’s narrow loss to Championship leaders Burnley.

Dike thought he had the opener, but his header could only force a corner kick. Darnell Furlong was on hand to nod home the ensuing corner kick for the opening goal. They thought they had doubled their advantage, but the goal was taken back for a foul.

Nathan Tella was able to get Burnley back on level terms with a thumping shot form a tight angle, and Scott Twine’s 87th-minute goal proved to be the game winner through a  superb free kick. 

West Brom sit in tenth place, one point off of the playoff spots. Next up is a trip to Bristol City in the FA Cup.

Matt Turner was on the bench for Arsenal’s 3-2 thriller over Manchester United.

Christian Pulisic is injured and did not feature for Chelsea in their 0-0 draw away to Liverpool.

Antonee Robinson and Tim Ream face off against Tottenham on Monday in the Premier League.

Vaughan Covil did not feature for Hull City in their 1-0 loss to Sheffield United.

Alex Mighten did not make the bench for Sheffield Wednesday in their 1-0 win over Fleetwood.

Charlie Kelman was subbed off at half time after his team went to 10 men, Leyton Orient getting thumped by Stevenage 3-0.
