Italian Recap: Novakovich Cameo Not Enough for Frosinone

1 minute, 44 seconds Read

Andrija Novakovich was brought on as late firepower as Frosinone attempted to tip the scales against Como on Wednesday night, but it wasn’t enough as they fell to a second straight loss in Serie B.

Frosinone 1 – 2 Como 1907

Playing at home against midtable Como, Frosinone were looking to bounce back from their tough weekend loss. However their inability to overcome a halftime deficit dropped them further from the Serie B automatic promotion spots, with a place in the post-season playoffs looking more likely by the day.

Novakovich played the final quarter-hour, coming into the game in place of defender Matteo Cotali to help the team make a final push to rescue at least a point, but they were thwarted by their guests.

Despite Frosinone having the better of early chances, Como were first on the board after 28 minutes. Ettore Gliozzi did the damage, taking everybody by surprise with a cheeky behind-the-back heel-flick.

Francesco Zampano pulled the hosts even in the 37th minute with a leaping poke from the right side of the area. However, Como’s Nicholas Ioannou restored the lead two minutes before the half with a low shot from five yards that deflected off of the keeper’s grip and into the netting for 2-1.

Frosinone had the better run of things, with Novakovich in position to nearly tap in the equalizing goal, however he poorly controlled the perfect pass, and was punching the turf in frustration after the keeper safely bundled up the ball.

In the end, Como held on for the victory, still leaving Frosinone in sixth place in the Serie B standings, albeit with a six-point gap to the automatic promotion spots. They will be back on the field on Saturday with a difficult visit to third-place Brescia.

Notes

Guiseppe Barone was not in uniform for Ascoli on Wednesday night in their 2-0 road win over Benevento. Anthony Fontana is rumored to be confirmed as a free-transfer signing by Ascoli any day now, however will not be immediately available due to injury. Ascoli return to Serie B action on Saturday with a visit from Alessandria.
