EFL Recap: Jack McGlynn, Luca Bombino Star in Stoke City Win

The duo of Jack McGlynn and Luca Bombino teamed up on an important goal to help Stoke City to win over Portsmouth in weekend action from the English Championship.

Portsmouth 1-2 Stoke City

Stoke remained in third place in the standings with a strong showing in the second half to take all three points from Portsmouth at Fratton Park, making it five consecutive away wins.

Jack McGlynn went the distance for the Potters as he took only one shot, won three duels, and made two recoveries. Luca Bombino came off the bench to play 33 minutes, making a key pass, winning two duels, and making three defensive contributions.

The visitors got themselves behind after six minutes when a poor clearance from a corner kick allowed Tyrese Shade to pounce on the loose ball in the 18-yard box for the goal. Portsmouth controlled the first half and had other chances to extend their lead, but Stoke’s goalkeeper was able to make some important stops.

Stoke showed more improvement in the second half, and were rewarded with the equalizer in the 59th minute. Bombino, who had just entered the game, was on the spot to block Portsmouth’s clearance from the area, which sent the ball in the direction of McGlynn to put away his left-footed strike.

The Potters took the lead in the 77th minute when a long-range shot was blocked by the goalkeeper, but Ben Wilmots followed through to head the ball into the goal.

After the international break, Stoke will return to action with a home game against Birmingham City on November 21.
