Champions League Recap: Cardoso’s Atletico Humiliates Tottenham at the Metropolitano

2 minutes, 34 seconds Read

Johnny Cardoso’s Atletico destroyed Tottenham as Yunus Musah’s Atalanta were humiliated by Bayern Munich in Champions League action.

Atletico Madrid 5 – 2 Tottenham

Johnny Cardoso was in the starting line-up for Atletico when they hosted last year’s Europa League winners Tottenham Hotspur at the Metropolitano Stadium in the Spanish capital. The Spaniards put five past the hapless Londoners, scoring thrice after just fifteen minutes after three costly errors. Spurs young Czech goalkeeper, Antonin Kinsky was pulled from the game two minutes later.

It didn’t start well for the 22 year old keeper when he slipped in the 6th minute and gifted Marcos Llorente the opening goal. Slipping and sliding seemed to be the order of the night for the visitors as Antoine Griezmann took advantage of defender Micky van de Ven losing his footing, as he picked up the ball and smashed it into the back of the net. That wasn’t the end of it however because another slip and silly pass by the Czech keeper allowed Julian Alvarez to roll the ball into the goal a minute later.

The hosts kept the pressure on and even with a new keeper, the goals kept coming. Robin Le Normand made it four in the 22nd minute before Spurs managed to light up the score board four minutes later with a scorcher from Pedro Porro.

It took Atletico 10 minutes after the restart to score their fifth on the night. Julian Alvarez created the goal all by himself when he dribbled into the box and drilled his shot into the bottom left corner, giving the Italian keeper, Guglielmo Vicaro, no chance at heroics.

A 76th minute Dominic Solanke closed the deficit but going back home down three goals will be a tough ask for the English Premier League struggles.

Notes

Malik Tillmann came off the bench late in the game for Bayer Leverkusen in their 1-1 draw against Arsenal. Neither team was able to find the back of the net in the first half but a minute after the intermission, Robert Andrich scored for the Germans from a free kick. Tillman was introduced into the game in the 74th minute as Bayer tried to hold onto their lead.

In the 86th minute the American slid into the feet of Noni Madueke, who came on in the 60th minute for the Gunners. The foul was in the box and VAR confirmed the decision before Leverkusen legend; Kai Havertz scored from the spot for the London club to deny them the victory.

The return leg will be on Tuesday when Tillmann and Leverkusen head to London.

Yunush Musah got to watch Bayern Munich’s first four goals from the bench fly past his Atalanta keeper, before coming onto the field in the 55th minute. The Germans humiliated the Italians in Bergamo, putting six past them.

Michael Olise scored twice, one on either side of the intermission. A 93rd minute goal from Croatian Mario Pasalic denied Bayern the shut-out but going to Munich next week is all but a formality for the German side.
