Belgian Recap: Reynolds, Westerlo Steal Point from the Champs

Day 27 in the Belgian Pro League is done and dusted, with just three more games left to the regular season.

Westerlo 0 – 0 Union St Gilloise

It was a good point for Westerlo when they hosted the Belgian champions on Sunday, especially since they were reduced to ten men after Clinton Nsiala’s 29th minute red card. Bryan Reynolds continued in his right back spot and played until the final whistle.

In a moment of stupidity, French defender Nsiala, won a free kick against Union’s Marc Giger, who knocked the ball out of Nsiala’s hand. The youngster lost his head and struck the Swiss attacker. The referee had no choice but to pull the red card out of his pocket.

With a man advantage, the reigning Belgian champions should have made easy work of their opponents but despite 63% possession, they were unable to have their way with De Kemphanen at Het Kuijpe.

The Westerlo point leaves them in ninth place, with a realistic chance of making the top play-off group. Up next will be a road trip to take on OH Leuven.

Notes

Marlon Fossey was not on the team sheet when Standard Liege hosted La Louviere and sent the league new boys home with a point in their bag after a 1-1 draw. Up next will be a Sunday evening clash in Waregem to take on Zulte.

Lierse took a lead after 20 minutes that they never relinquished, handing Jamath Shoffner and the Yellow-Blacks all the points in Genk. Kayden Pierre played the duration in his right back position. The game ended 3-2. Up next for Shoffner’s boys will be a visit from Club Brugge Reserves and for Pierre’s side, a trip to Beerschot.
