French Recap: Weah Scores as Marseille Destroy Nice

2 minutes, 35 seconds Read

Returning from the international break, Tim Weah found the back of the net for on-fire Marseille in Ligue 1 action.

Nice 1 – 5 Marseille

It was something of a goalfest for Marseille as they returned from the international break and put five past Nice (not very nice for Nice) on the road. Tim Weah was among the goal scorers, and also played the full 90 minutes.

Thirty-six-year-old Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang got the scoring underway after just 11 minutes off a corner kick delivered into the 18-yard box that Benjamin Pavard tap forward for the Gabonese striker to put away from close range. Twenty-two minutes later Mason Greenwood latched onto a deflected Weah cross at the top of the box that the former Manchester United striker buried into the back of the Nice net.

Less than 10 minutes into the second half, the once-capped Englishman was celebrating his second of the game and his 10th of the season. It was then his American colleagues turn to finally open his Ligue 1 account when Aubameyang set him up on the right to blast the ball inside the far post.

Credit to Nice, who didn’t give up after going down by four as they kept battling and closed the gap with Mohamed Cho’s third of the season. But then Igor Paixao cancelled that one out with another Aubameyang assist.

The emphatic display keeps the pressure on top of the league PSG, who also collected three points over the weekend. Up next for the Boys from Marseille will be a Tuesday night visit from Newcastle United for a Champions League clash, before hosting Mark McKenzie and Toulouse.

Toulouse 0 – 1 Angers

Mark McKenzie put in an 82-minute shift when Les Violets welcomed Les Noirs et Blancs of Angers to Toulouse. The game wasn’t an exciting one for the fans with the only goal of the game coming early in the first half, giving the visitors their first win on the road this season.

A fifth minute McKenzie long through almost paid dividends but Charlie Cresswell’s powerful header ricocheted off the crossbar and out of harm’s way. Not having won in Toulouse in six years, Yassin Belkhdim’s second chance after the initial effort was deflected put them on their way to stopping that streak.

Toulouse now sit in 10th place as their winless streak continues. They will however try to fix that next time out when they travel to red-hot Marseille.

Notes

Tanner Tessmann was on the field for the duration as his Olympians of Lyon and opponents Auxerre refused to score a goal for the fans on hand. Never mind. Lyon will try to do better next time when they take on Maccabi Tel Aviv on Thursday in Europa League action. The game will be played in Serbia. Their next league game will be on Sunday against Nantes.

Folarin Balogun had to sit out Monaco’s 4-1 defeat at the hands of Stade Rennes as he serves his red card suspension. Wednesday night they’ll travel to the Mediterranean island of Cyprus to take on Pafos in Champions League action before returning to the league and a clash against French champs, PSG.
