Isaiah Young’s stoppage-time strike helped second division Arminia Bielefeld to an upset win over the Bundesliga’s Werder Bremen in the first round of the German Cup.
Arminia Bielefeld 1-0 Werder Bremen
Last season’s German Cup finalist booked their place in the second round as they once again eliminated Werder Bremen with a win at the Schuco Arena.
Bielefeld captain Mael Corboz started and went the distance, completing 80 percent passing, winning two duels, and making a tackle. Isaiah Young came off the bench to play the final 12 minutes as won two duels and made a clearance.
The game ended scoreless in the first half as both sides had a few good chances, but things turned towards the advantage of the hosts just minutes into the second interval when the referee gave Bremen midfielder Leonardo Bittencourt a yellow card for a bad tackle on Sam Schreck.
His night got worse two minutes later when the referee sent him off rough challenge on Marvin Mehlem.
Bielefeld’s confidence started to grow, and they came very close to opening the scoring in the 57th minute. Corboz’s crossed the ball from the left side of the box to Julian Kania, but his right-footed attempt was saved by Bremen goalkeeper Michael Zetterer.
The hosts then found the goal in the 93rd minute. After gaining control of the ball in the midfield, Corboz passed it on to Benjamin Boakye, who then sent it towards a wide-open Young to slot it home for the win.
