Matthew Hoppe’s first-ever start for SønderjyskE didn’t yield the same goal-scoring results as last weekend’s second-half cameo, while Andres Jason helped Aalborg earn their first win of the season in their attempt to return to Denmark’s top flight.
Viborg FF 1 – 0 SønderjyskE
After netting his first professional goal since 2023 in last weekend’s substitute appearance, Matthew Hoppe rightfully earned a starting spot in SønderjyskE’s road game at Viborg, however the team was held at bay by their hosts in spite of a strong performance.
For his part, Hoppe was largely kept out of direct action in his 71 minutes of play, only getting 15 touches, one inside the 18-yard box, and taking a single shot from outside the area midway through the first half. He was occasionally targeted by his teammates with some long attempts, however their 13 total shots and 58% possession bore no fruit.
Highlights of the game can be seen at this link.
The only goal of the game came three minutes past the half-hour, when Thomas Jørgensen slid an off-balance pass to Mads Søndergaard as he split the space between a pair of defenders, who hit his sweeping right-footed shot to the lower left corner.
SønderjyskE end the round in 10th place, with four points from their four games. Next up is a trip to Fredericia on Friday.
Notes
None of the three Americans on the rosters of Brøndby and Vejle saw the field on Sunday when the two teams met in Brøndby Stadium. Backup keeper Gavin Beavers did not make it off of the bench for the hosts, while Justin Che was not selected for the gamely roster. For the visitors, Jonathan Amon is recovering from a slight injury and was given another week to fully recover. Brøndby won by a 2-1 margin and are tied on points with city rivals FC Copenhagen on nine from their first four games.
Former NYCFC midfielder Andres Jasson started for Aalborg BK on Sunday afternoon, playing 75 minutes against hosts HB Køge as the team finally earned their first win in the Danish 1. Division in their fourth attempt.
