The Yanks of PSV didn’t score this week but they did set a few up in weekend Eredivisie action
PSV 5 – 1 AZ Alkmaar
After their first loss of the season against NEC, the Farmers have righted the ship as they cruised to a five-one victory over visiting AZ. Both Sergino Dest and Malik Tillman were in the starting line-up, with both assisting on goals. Ricardo Pepi was not on the team sheet but Richard Ledezma was.
The clock had not yet reached double-digits when PSV celebrated their first goal. Tillman set up Johan Bakayoko for that one. In the 23rd minute the American was at it again, this time setting up the prolific goal scorer Luuk de Jong who netted from close range.
De Jong scored again just after the break, netting his 24th of the season. Although the visitors tried to get back into the game with a 58th minute Vangelis Pavlidis strike, PSV netted in the 80th and 90th minutes to put the game to bed.
It’ll only be a matter of weeks before PSV lifts the trophy as second place Feynoord remain nine points behind them with five games left to the season. Up next however will be a home game against Vitesse.
Vitesse 0 – 3 Nijmegen
Paxton Aaronson was in the starting line-up for last place Vitesse as they suffered yet another defeat, this time at the hands of NEC, who put three second half goals past hapless Arnhem.
The strugglers held their own in the first half although their American picked up a 31st minute yellow card. It was the second half that was to be their downfall, starting in the 65th minute when Mees Hoedemakers netted for just the first time this season for what turned out to be the game winner. But more goals were to come.
In the 80th minute Sonjte Hansen got in on the act and scored his fourth of the season after Kodai Sano set him up. The Dutchman got the assist on the first goal.
With time running out, Hansen rounded off his impressive afternoon with another goal, giving him two and an assist.
Vitesse have probably written off their Saturday matinee as a lost cause as they will face high flying PSV Eindhoven.
Volendam 3 – 2 Waalwijk
Zack Booth put in an 80 minute shift for Volendam as they shot off to a first half 2-0 lead, only to see Waalwijk fight back and tie things up just before the hour mark.
The first goal hit the back of the net after just 14 minutes when Darius Johnson played a through ball to Robert Mühren. He struck from a tight angle, from the left side of goal and wheeled away to celebrate. Eight minutes later the Dutch striker netted again, this time from close range.
In the space of four second half minutes, KRC tied the game up but 15 minutes later Johnson hit the goal that won the game.
Volendam, stuck in a relegation spot will next face Excelsior, who are one place and three points ahead of them.
Notes
Anthony Fontana never made it off the bench as Zwolle beat Excelsior Rotterdam by a 2-1 score line and can pretty much feel much better about any chance of ending up in a relegation battle. Next up they’ll take on NEC Nijmegen.
