American center-back Donovan Pines has made a move to Barnsley in England’s League One, departing from Major League Soccer’s D.C. United after a four-season stint.

The 25-year-old has signed a 1.5-year contract with a team option for 2025-26, as announced by the club on Saturday.

“I’m really excited to be here,” Pines said in a club interview with his new club. “There is a lot of history here, since 1887, and I’m really excited to put my foot in the water and test it and do the best I can for the Club. I feel like there is a lot of raw talent that I’m watching and seeing in these games. Hopefully, I can contribute in a big way and be a leader on the team.”

Pines, who played at River Hill and the University of Maryland, joined D.C. United in 2019 as a homegrown player. The 6-foot-5 defender made 21 league appearances last year, equalling his career-high with three goals.

At 25, Pines moves to the Tykes after not being re-signed by DC United at the end of the 2023 MLS season. Making his debut in April 2019, the former DC United homegrown player went on to accumulate 87 league appearances. Additionally, he has earned two caps with the USMNT to date. Pines represented the United States at the 2021 CONCACAF Gold Cup which they went on to win.
