Scottish League Cup Recap: Americans Advance to Semis

Cameron Carter-Vickers, James Sands, and Malik Tillman helped their respective teams to victories as Celtic and Rangers booked their places in the semifinals of the Scottish League Cup.

Motherwell 0-4 Celtic

Celtic had no worries on the night as they easily disposed of Motherwell at Fir Park to book their place in the semifinals.

Cameron Carter-Vickers led the Hoops out for the game as he wore the captain’s armband, playing the entire game.

It took sometime, but the visitors finally opened the scoringin the 44th minute when Liel Abada was on the spot to tap in a low cross from Greg Taylor.

The cup holders continued their assault on Motherwell’s goal in the second half as Abada scored his second on the night in the 56th minute. Josip Juranovic’s shot was parried away by goalkeeper Liam Kelly, but the Israeli international would pounce on the loose ball to bury it home.

Reo Hatate scored Celtic’s third in the 60th minute from close range. Kyogo Furuhashi completed the scoring with in the 76th minute.

Celtic will be off to Hampden Park in January 2023 to face Kilmarnock in the semifinal.

Rangers 1-0 Dundee

Rangers scored early and was able to hold on for the rest of the game as they secured their place in the semifinals with a win over Championship side Dundee at Ibrox Stadium.

Both Malik Tillman and James Sands started forthe Light Blues, with the former playing 73 minutes and the latter going the distance in the contest.

The hosts opened the scoring 10 minutes into the game when Steven Davis pounced on a loose ball following a shot from his teammate Scott Wright to put it past Dundee goalkeeper Adam Legzdins.

From that point, it was all about holding on as Rangers had several chances to add to their tally but could not find the back of the net. The visitors had a couple of chances, but they proved to be no serious threat.

Rangers will next square off against Aberdeen at Hampden Park for a spot in the League Cup final.

Notes

Elsewhere in the Scottish League Cup, Christian Ramirez played the entire second half as Aberdeen advanced with a 4-1 win over Partick Thistle.

Ian Harkes did not come off the bench as Dundee United was eliminated by Kilmarnock in a 2-1 defeat.
