English Recap: Sargent Continues Surge Ahead of September Friendlies

Josh Sargent continued to score for Norwich City, while it was an otherwise bad day at the office for Yanks in England. Read and watch the highlights below.

Josh Sargent scored the game winner for Norwich while Zack Steffen was dropped for the Middlesbrough squad due to “fitness”. Vaughn Covil started for Hull and was forced off through an injury just 25 minutes in, while Charlie Kelman was involved in three out of four goals for Leyton Orient.

Brighton 1 – 0 Leeds

Brendan Aaronson and Tyler Adams started for Jesse Marsch’s Leeds United, who lose for the first time this season.

Aaronson had a bursting run that nearly resulted in a goal, beating several Brighton players, but the final shot went wide and unable to be steered home at the back post.

The lone goal of the game would come in the 66th minute from Pascal Gross, after a sweeping move from Brighton found him at the back post for a thumping shot.

Aaronson and Adams will hope to get back on winning ways against Everton on Tuesday.

Arsenal 2 – 1 Fulham

Fulham captain Tim Ream was subbed off with minutes to play while Antonee Robinson went the distance in the narrow loss to the Gunners.

Matt Turner was on the bench for Arsenal.

Aleksander Mitrovic sent the away fans into elation in the 56th minute after stealing the ball off of a casual Gabriel just outside the penalty box. A quick touch to reset saw the in-form striker slot past Aaron Ramsdale to the far post.

The joy was short-lived as Martin Odegaard leveled just eight minutes later. Ream was the closest defender but neither he or Bernd Leno were unable to get anything substantial on the shot. The goalkeeper made another error at the end of the game as Gabriel poked home a dropped corner.

Robinson and Ream play Brighton on Tuesday, while Turner’s Arsenal will play Aston Villa on Wednesday.

Manchester City 4 – 2 Crystal Palace

Chris Richards was a 57th minute substitute and witnessed an Erling Haaland hat-trick against his Crystal Palace, who fell apart in the second half.

A pair of corners earned Crystal Palace a 2-0 lead, an early own goal from John Stones followed by a Joachim Andersen bullet header in the 21st minute.

It would take until the 53rd minute for City to claw one back, Bernardo Silva beating the whole left side to score a scorcher.

Richards was brought on in the 57th minute, and Haaland subsequently switched on his engine in the 62nd minute to provide the first goal in a 19-minute hat-trick. Phil Foden curled a cross into the box where Haaland was the most hungry for the ball, smashing it home with his head.

Richards was the closest to the next goal, a ball across the box by Stones to an unmarked (loosely by Richards) Haaland for a back post tap-in the 81st minute.

Richard will hope to continue his gain in minutes on Tuesday when they play Brentford.

Sunderland 0 – 1 Norwich

Josh Sargent scored the game winner for Norwich over Lynden Gooch’s Sunderland, continuing his impressive run in the Championship.

The American goalscorer started on the front foot, nearly stealing an early goal after closing down the Sunderland goalkeeper.

He had a few more chances throughout the game, however his 56th minute goal was a case of a good run, with a tap in from two yards out.

Norwich City and Sargent play against Birmingham on Tuesday, while Sunderland will hope to get back on winning ways for new manager Alex Neil on Wednesday against Rotherham.

Luton Town 1 – 1 Sheffield United

Ethan Horvath and Luton Town were able to earn a point against league leaders Sheffield United.

Carlton Morris opened the scoring in the tenth minute with a flicked header to the back post.

Sheffield United replied with a 53rd minute equalizer through Oliver McBurnie, Luton failing to clear their lines and the ferocious shot from the back post left Horvath with little chance.

Horvath and Luton Town play against Cardiff on Tuesday.

Leyton Orient 4 – 2 Hartlepool United

Charlie Kelman scored his first goal and racked up his first assist for Leyton Orient in League Two as part of a rout over the visiting team Hartlepool United.

Kelman was the start of the opening goal, getting dragged down in the box just four minutes into the game. George Moncur stepped up to convert the resulting spot kick.

Wesley McDonald pulled Hartlepool level in the 32nd minute, putting the entire Leyton defense on ice before slotting home one cooly to the back post.

The American netted his goal just six minutes later after his give-and-go to Theo Archibald, getting the ball back just inside the penalty box to find a fine finish. Paul Smyth added the insurance goal in the 48th minute, after Ben Killip saved his initial effort.

Josh Umerah pulled one back in the 70th minute through a penalty kick, before Kelman provided an assist, keeping the ball alive at the back post for Ruel Sotiriou to thump home in the 74th minute.

Leyton play in the Papa Johns Trophy on Tuesday against Oxford United.
