English Recap: Adams, Aaronson Help Leeds United Destroy Chelsea

Brendan Aaronson and Tyler Adams ran the show (and started) against substitute Christian Pulisic’s Chelsea, while Josh Sargent is making a case to be Norwich City’s (and USMNT?) new No. 9.

Leeds 3 – 0 Chelsea

Brendan Aaronson and Tyler Adams enjoyed starting positions and a fantastic win, while compatriot Christian Pulisic was reserved for a 64th-minute substitution role for Chelsea.

Aaronson got the scoring started in the 33rd minute after a horrible decision from Eduoard Mendy to try to dribble past the American’s onrushing pressure. A quick tackle and a tap-in later, it was 1-0.

Less than four minutes later Rodrygo had the hosts up by two after a Raheem Sterling foul gave up a soft free kick. The new goal scorer leaped the highest to flick on his header to the back post. The scoring would be wrapped up in the 69th minute through Jack Harrison after a convincing counterattack from Leeds saw the winger prod home from close range.

Chelsea went down to 10 men in the 84th minute as Kalidou Koulibaly was shown a second yellow card for a reckless tackle.

Aaronson and Adams play against Barnsley in the League Cup on Wednesday while Pulisic will hope to get a chance next weekend against Leicester City.

Jesse Marsch post match interview:

Fulham 3 – 2 Brentford

Captain Tim Ream and Antonee Robinson went the distance in Fulham’s 3-2 win over Brentford.

Bobby Decordova-Reid started the scoring in the opening 45 seconds when Aleksander Mitrovic was given time and space down the left. After a few ricocheted shots in the Brentford penalty area, including one off of the crossbar, Reid tucked it away from close distance.

Joao Palhina doubled the scoring in the 20th minute off of a corner kick off of a monstrous header. Christian Norgaard would get one back for Brentford off of a cleverly worked free kick just before halftime, a side-footed effort from eight yards out.

Yoanne Wissa found the gap in between Robison and Ream, squaring the ball across the Fulham penalty box for a clinical finish from Ivan Toney right on top of the six-yard box.

The game-winner came from none other than Mitrovic himself with a signature header at the far post back across the face of the goal and into the side netting.

Robinson and Ream play against Crawley in the League Cup on Tuesday.

Norwich 2 – 0 Millwall

Josh Sargent scored twice against Millwall to give Norwich a vital three points in the Championship.

It took until the 50th minute for Sargent to get off the mark, the American playing a clever give and go with Daniel Sinani around the edge of the penalty box. As the ball came back to Sargent, he unleashed a cannon that left the Millwall goalkeeper incapable of handling.

Sargent doubled the lead in the 75th minute through equal parts industry and craft. A hoofed clearance saw the ball bounce to Sargent in a 2v1 situation, and he outmuscled his Millwall defenders to play the ball toward Sinani into space. Sargent had the wherewithal to continue his run, and once he was fed the ball back, his one-touch shot from the edge of the area angled perfectly into the bottom corner.

Norwich City and Sargent play against Bournemouth in the League Cup on Tuesday.

Reading 1 – 0 Middlesbrough

Zack Steffen tops the goalkeeping table in the Championship in the goals allowed category after conceding against Reading, keeping Middlesbrough in the relegation zone.

The American goalkeeper had a great save early on, but was rooted to his spot when Tyrese Fornah smashed a shot from distance in the 28th minute.

Boro had chances, but it was too little too late for the visitors. Steffen and Boro play against Swansea next weekend.

Swansea 0 – 2 Luton Town

Ethan Horvath kept a clean sheet for Luton Town in their win over Swansea.

Allan Campbell scored in the 14th minute to open the scoring, with a monstrous shot from distance beating the Swansea keeper. Substitute Carlton Morris provided the insurance goal in the 72nd minute, beating his defender with a scissor before rifling home.

Horvath had one late save to make, but he dealt with it comfortably in the end.

Horvath and Luton Town play against Sheffield United on Friday.
