German Recap: Joe Scally, Borussia Monchengladbach Share Spoils with Schalke

Joe Scally and Borussia Monchengladbach conceded a late penalty as they shared the points with newly-promoted Schalke.

Schalke 2-2 Borussia Mochengladbach

A penalty in the 93rd minute denied Borussia Monchengladbach the win in the end as they had to leave the Veltins Arena with a point against Bundesliga returnees Schalke.

Joe Scally went the distance for the Foals, completing 80 percent of his passes and winning five duels.

The hosts jumped out to the lead before the half-hour mark when Rodrigo Zalazar took the ball at midfield from teammate Tobias Mohr and darted towards ‘Gladbach’s goal. With not a single defender shutting him down, the Uruguayan fired a shot from distance that goalkeeper Yann Sommer failed to stop.

The visitors were finding it hard to find a goal to level the score until midway through the second half when Marcus Thuram pounced on the loose ball and backheeled to Jonas Hofmann who put his shot past Schalke goalkeeper Alexander Schwolow.

Thuram then gave a shock to the Schalke supporters when he scored in the 78th minute to gove ‘Gladbach the lead. Hofmann’s corner kick was sent up in the air and it should have been an easy grab for Schwolow, but the fumbled the grab, thus allowing the Frenchman to bury the ball in the back of the net.

The momentum had surely shifted in the visitors favor, but they lost the chanc to steal all three points when the video assistant referee intervened in the late stages of the game. Replays show that substitute Patrick Herrmann handled the ball in the area from a Schalke free-kick. This left the referee no choice but to point to the spot.

Marius Bulter stepped up and converted the spot-kick to ensure that the hosts took a point from the game.

Borussia Monchengladbach sits in third place in the standings on four points.
