Brenden Aaronson helped Leeds United kick off their English Premier League campaign with a 2-1 comeback win over Wolves on Saturday, with the deciding goal that he firmly believes was his despite it being recorded as an own goal.
The goal would come in the 74th minute when Aaronson’s teammate Patrick Bamford took possession of the ball on the left side in Wolve’s end. The striker then sent a low cross towards the center where the 21-year-old would be on the spot to stick it home.
It would have been a great way to start his EPL career by scoring the game-winner in front of the Elland Road faithful, but bad news came later when the goal was credited to Wolves defender Rayan Ait Nouri.
When asked about the goal after the game, Aaronson, with a huge smile on his face, insisted that it was all his.
“I touched it in there! It was in there and it came off my shin somewhere in there, so I’m taking credit for it,” he said.
The summer signing from Red Bull Salzburg explained afterward how the goal was something that team has been working on in training.
“We’ve been working on it in training, this back post run, and you always have to be there. If I’m not there, then the guy can maybe clear it or something, so just making that back post run helps,” he said.
With his first official game at Leeds under his belt and securing three points along the way, Aaronson noted how crucial it was to get off to a good start on opening day.
“It’s a big, awesome result for us to start the season with three points,” he said. “At the end of last year to go out was tough, but to start the year with three points is always great.”
Aaronson and Leeds United will now prepare for next Saturday as they head south to face Southampton at St. Mary’s Stadium.
