Swiss Recap: Jordan Pefok, Young Boys Beat Sion to Maintain Unbeaten Run

It was a rare quiet day for Jordan Pefok, but Young Boys continued their unbeaten run with a win over Sion.

Young Boys 3-1 Sion

Young Boys got some help from their opponents before going on to score two unanswered goals to complete the win over Sion at Stadion Wankdorf and extend their unbeaten run to eight games.

Jordan Pefok was not on the scoresheet this time, but he did go the distance, completing 83 percent of his passes and winning five duels along with two shots on goal.

The hosts had to thank Sion for scoring the opening goal after 21 minutes when Moumi Ngamaleu’s cross from the right side of the box took a deflection off Brazilian midfielder Wesley’s leg and looped over the goalkeeper as it hit the goal.

Young Boys thought they had doubled their lead in the 40th minute when Sandro Lauper played the ball to Pefok to score what should have been his 16th goal of the season. However, the assistant referee raised his flag for offside.

Despite having the advantage for most of the game, Young Boys allowed their opponents to level the score in the 56th minute. Filip Stojilkovic ran onto a headed pass from Giovanni Sio to cooly tuck past goalkeeper Anthony Racioppi.

However, the hosts restored their lead a minute later when Wilfried Kanga took control of a long ball from the back and played it to Fabian Rieder to slot past Sion goalkeeper Kevin Fickentscher.

Pefok once again put the ball in the back of the net in the 77th minute, which should have iced the game, but the assistant referee put his flag up a second time for offside, denying the striker another goal.

Meschack Elia would finally put the game to bed in the 88th minute when he was on the spot to knock in the ball after Fickentscher stopped Pefok’s glancing header from a corner kick.

Young Boys remains in second place in the standings with 43 points, still 10 behind leaders FC Zurich.
