Otasowie’s Brugge Status in Jeopardy with the American Absent in Training

Last summer Belgian champions Club Brugge went shopping to make their strong domestic team also a strong team in UEFA’s Champions League competition.

One of their marquee signings was American Owen Otasowie. The New York City-born midfielder was bought from Premier League team Wolverhampton Wanderers for a staggering £3.5 million, in order to boost their midfield as they played in Europe.

Things haven’t gone well for the young American as he still waits for his Club Brugge debut six months after having signed on the dotted line. Games in friendlies are all that he could boast about when he comes to the first team. He did however, make a few U-23 appearances with Club NXT, where he failed to impress the coaches.

It was reported that Otasowie headed to Belgium in order to get more playing time and boost his chances of making a dream come true; playing with the USA in the FIFA World Cup in Qatar in 2022.

Having not been sighted at the training ground recently, the question around the Venice of the North is, where is Otasowie?

New Club coach Alfred Schreuder was somewhat coy when asked this at the team’s press conference on Friday afternoon.

“He’s not there,” the coach said, stating the obvious.

The coaching staff have become so disillusioned with the American that they reportedly entertained the idea of looking for a deal that would see him leave the team in January, though no deal could be made. There is now talk of cutting their losses and terminating his contract that is due to run until mid-2025.

When pressed for an update on Otasowie’s future, the Dutchman stated, “What will happen to him? We have to wait and see.”
